Tonight: DCTA Open House on Denton Commuter Rail
Don't forget to attend the Open House tonight beginning 6:30pm at the MLK Recreation Center in Denton, TX. Refer to earlier posts on this blog or the DCTA website for further details....
How did the family cross the road?
Very carefully.
Walks in the neighborhood are great, especially with this cool weather we've been having, but I wish the roads were more pedestrian-friendly. Brenda and I (and the baby, of course) are often out walking and one of our favorite areas to walk to is in the vicinity of Congress, Austin St. and Oakland St. To get their from our house requires crossing both Elm and Locust at Congress. These intersections are not good: Elm is wide, often busy, and without a cross walk. Locust is narrow enough, but also lacks a cross walk. I'd like to see better sidewalks in general, but on Congress street, where there is plenty of foot traffic it would seem a priority to create a better walking experience by improving the sidewalks and adding crosswalks.

Field Trip to Phoenix Farm Rising with Denton Organic Society
Received an email from Doug Rohde at the Denton Organic Society. They are taking a field trip to Phoenix Farm Rising on September 21st. I am interested in attending myself, but may have family commitments that preclude my going.
This is directly from the email:
Sunday, September 21, 3:00pm -- Field Trip
Visit Phoenix Farm Rising in Ponder. They raise a variety of vegetables as a CSA operation and wheat grass & sunflower sprouts for sale to area stores. They also raise chickens for free-range eggs and are working to become a Demeter Certified Biodynamic farm. (Don't know what that is? Join us for the field trip and find out!)
We will leave Denton at 3:00pm from TLC Landscapes on Ft. Worth Drive (directly across from Meador Nursery). We will return around 5:30pm. For information call 940-382-8551.

Coming Monday: Denton Commuter Rail Open House
Having had the pleasure of living in some places with great rail systems, I have long seen the possible benefit to North Texas, and Denton, in particular. It turns out, there are other folks who have seen the benefit and have begun taking action.
This Monday September 15 from 6:30pm to 8pm at MLK Recreation Center, the Denton County Transportation Authority is holding an open house to present design updates for the DCTA commuter rail system. I will be there to educate myself and to gain confidence in the process.
I strongly encourage those interested in the quality of life in our community attend. Others might be concerned to know how their tax dollars are going to be spent--this event would be must see, as well.
Here is the address:
Monday,September 15, 2008
6:30 to 8:00 pm
Martin Luther King Recreation Center,
1300 Wilson Street,
Denton, TX 76205
For more information about the DCTA, click on the link on the upper right hand side of the blog in the LINKS section.
For those of you that are interested, but unable to attend on Monday: there is another meeting in Lewisville on September 22!
